Mark Slater co-founded Slater Investments in 1994 with Ralph Baber and is Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Slater Investments, Chairing the Investment Committee. The company manages a hedge fund, four unit trusts and portfolios for pension schemes, charities and high net worth individuals. Recent awards include: UK All Companies, Best 10 Year Performance - Slater Growth Fund (City of London Fund Awards 2018), "Best of British" - No 1 - Top 25 UK Fund Managers (TD Direct Investing 2017 & 2016, Best Larger UK Equity Growth Fund & Best Smaller UK Equity Income Fund - MFM Slater Growth & Income Funds (Money Observer Fund Awards 2016) and Fund Manager of the Year Awards (City AM Awards 2014). He has also received top ratings from several well-known rating agencies. Prior to founding Slater Investments, Mark worked as a financial journalist with Analyst plc and the Investor's Chronicle. Also, in 1992, he helped research and edit a best-selling investment book "The Zulu Principle" for his father, Jim Slater, which focuses on identifying small to medium-sized growth companies. During his career, Mark has served on the boards of four public companies in which he has been a substantial shareholder. Mark has an MA in History from Cambridge University.
Chief Operating Officer
Ralph Baber is Chief Operating Officer and co-founded Slater Investments in 1994 with Mark Slater. Ralph is the Chairman of the Compliance & Risk and Pricing Committees, and also serves on the Investment and Operations Committees. Ralph is responsible for risk control. Ralph has a BSc (Hons) degree and is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is a member of the Chartered Securities Institute. He has served on a number of regulatory panels including the SFA Appeals Tribunal. Ralph was a manager at Price Waterhouse until he left to join a client, CAL Futures Limited, first as a Finance Director and then, from 1987, as Managing Director. The company was one of Europe's leading hedge fund managers and a futures and options broker. In 1995, the broking business was sold to Union plc where Ralph initially became an Executive Director. In 1997, he was promoted to Chief Executive. In 1998, Union plc bought World Invest, which had £2.6 billion of equity funds under management. In 2001, Union plc was acquired by a private group and Ralph was appointed Chairman.
Alastair joined the Slater Investments Board as a Non-Executive Director in October 2019. Alastair originally qualified as a solicitor and practiced with Baker & McKenzie in London and in Asia. He moved into venture capital/private equity with NewMedia Spark (now Spark Venture Management) and then, with a small investor group, took control of Galahad Capital PLC which became a successful publicly quoted investment vehicle, with Alastair as Managing Director. He then founded Glendevon King Limited, a fund management company, and Eredene Capital PLC, an AIM-quoted investment company specialising in Indian Infrastructure projects prior to founding the Naisbitt King Group. Alastair also has an MSc in Finance from London Business School.
Ashley joined the Slater Investments board as a Non-Executive Director in October 2019. Ashley qualified as an Associate of The Chartered Insurance Institute in 1981 and subsequently, a Chartered Insurance Broker. Ashley commenced his career in 1977 with G H Hepburn & Co. Ltd in the Channel Islands. He returned to England in 1984 to establish Cox Hepburn Ltd, a corporate insurance broking business and an associated IFA business. These businesses were sold in 2003 and 2008 and he is now a director of a commercial insurance broking entity, Denmark Green Ltd.
Director of Research
Barrie Newton is a Director of Research and serves on the Investment Committee. Barrie obtained a BA Combined Honours Economics with Geography from University of Exeter. He obtained a MSc by Research (taken part time) from the School of Management at University of Bath (1969-1974). Barrie joined B S Stock Son & Co in 1969 as a trainee stock broker and became a partner in 1975. He remained a partner and subsequently became Head of Research with the succeeding companies, Stock & Orme and Stock Beech & Co Ltd. Barrie was responsible for smaller company research and corporate fund raising as well as some private client work. Barrie left Stock Beech in 1990 to co-found Rowan Dartington. Barrie, acting in the role of Managing Director, helped to develop the business to be a highly profitable and well diversified regional stockbroker, fund manager and major participant in AIM corporate finance. Barrie ran the largest and most successful client fund which outperformed its benchmark for 14 out of 15 years. Barrie concluded the sale of Rowan Dartington in 2006 and joined Slater Investments in 2008. Barrie is responsible for investment ideas and stock analysis.
Senior Equities Analyst
Nigel is Senior Equities Analyst and serves on the Investment Committee. Nigel holds a BA Hons degree in Business Studies and has worked in the financial services and media sectors for over two decades and is an experienced stock picker, financial editor and commentator within the investment arena. Nigel specialises in growth stocks and from 2000-2008 was the Editor of the equities newsletter "Investing for Growth" originally devised by Jim Slater. In addition, Nigel has contributed to many leading investment publications including Investors Chronicle and Money Week and has also supported the leading stock screening and share selection tool, Company REFS.
Tim Freeborn is an equities analyst and joined Slater Investments in February 2017. Since qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, Tim has had a varied career. For many years he was a City writer at The Daily Mail, he has also edited an investment newsletter and contributed to Shares Magazine. This was followed by several years as a stockbroking analyst at Evolution Securities and Xcap Securities covering growth companies. Before joining Slater Investments, Tim spent four years as the Chief Financial Officer of Silence Therapeutics, an Aim listed biotech company, and latterly ran its laboratories in Berlin. Tim serves on the Investment Committee.
Liz serves on the Compliance & Risk and Operations Committees. Liz has a BA in International Studies and English from Fairfield University. She previously worked as a client relationship manager with a wealth management advisor in the US. Liz earned the Certified Financial Planner® designation in 2009. She holds the CFA designation, the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) designation as well as the Investment Management Certificate. Liz joined Slater Investments in February 2010.
Senior Manager of Operations
Klaudia serves on the Compliance & Risk, Pricing and Operations Committees. Klaudia joined Slater Investments in December 2012. She has a BA (Hons) in Russian from Queen Mary University of London. She speaks three languages: Polish, Russian and English. Klaudia has completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and the Investment Management Certificate with the CFA Society UK.
Investor Relations and Dealing Manager
Lisa chairs the Operations Committee and serves on the Investment and Pricing Committees, and is responsible for Dealing and Investor Relations. She achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Geography from Northumbria University and has spent over 20 years in the City, five of which were at Goldman Sachs. Lisa also worked as a Pan European Equity Sales Trader at Rabo Bank, Old Mutual Securities, Arbuthnot Securities and Seymour Pierce. Lisa joined Slater Investments in August 2013 and has a wealth of experience in UK mid and small cap equities.
Head of Distribution
Jeremy joined the Business Development team at Slater Investments in September 2015. He graduated from the University of Bristol in 2009 with a BA (Hons) degree in Archaeology and spent a year working in corporate finance in Bangkok. Jeremy spent three and a half years in the City of London at private wealth manager, Charles Stanley & Co. His qualifications include the Investment Management Certificate, the CISI's Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma as well as the Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate. Jeremy has also passed the Financial Markets paper Level 6 of the CISI's Level 7 Chartered Wealth Manager qualification.
Victoria serves on the Compliance & Risk and Operations Committees. Victoria joined Slater Investments in July 2014 and has completed the Extended Investment Operations Certificate and the Certificate in Managing Cyber Security from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments. Victoria also completed the Investment Management Certificate with the CFA Society UK.
Yvonne joined Slater Investments in March 2015 and has a BSc in Biological Science from the University of Hertfordshire and speaks two languages, Vietnamese and English. Yvonne completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) in October 2015, and the Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) in November 2016 from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments. Yvonne serves on the Pricing Committee.
Christopher joined Slater Investments in June 2017 after studying Philosophy and Economics at University College Dublin. Christopher currently holds the CFA Level I, and is studying for Level II in 2020. Christopher has previously completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments in 2018 and speaks two languages, French and English.
Luke joined Slater Investments in May 2019 and has BA in History & Politics and an MA in International Conflict Analysis from the University of Kent, Canterbury. He is currently studying towards his Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments.
